YOGYAKARTA, TIMOR NOW HATENE - Tsunami expert from the Technology Application Assessment Agency, Widjo Kongko said that the southern coast of Java Island had the potential of an earthquake of 8.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake could trigger a massive tsunami, as high 20 meters.
"There are megathrust segments along the south of Java to Sumba on the east side and south of the Sunda Strait. As a result, there is a potential megathrust earthquake with magnitude 8.5 to 8.8, "he said in Yogyakarta (DIY) on Wednesday (7/17).
Earthquakes with this magnitude have the potential to cause tsunami waves to emerge. Based on the modeling, the tsunami wave has a potential height of 20 meters with a bathing distance of about four kilometers. So that the tsunami wave will arrive in about 30 minutes after a large earthquake occurs.
"If the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) takes five minutes since the earthquake to deliver an early warning, the community only has about 25 minutes to evacuate or take other anticipatory actions," he said.
Areas that are potentially affected by the tsunami wave if a megathrust earthquake occurs in the south of Java, especially in southern DIY, which is quite long, from Cilacap to East Java.
Based on the record, a large earthquake in the south of Java that caused a tsunami wave occurred in 1994 in Banyuwangi with a magnitude of 7 and in 2006 which caused a tsunami in Pangandaran due to the 6.8 magnitude earthquake.
"For the 1994 earthquake, there was no record of a tsunami in DIY. But in 2006 there was a record of a tsunami in the south of DIY but its reach did not exceed the Sand Gumuk in Parang Kusumo, "he said.
Nevertheless, based on the research conducted it was believed that a megathrust earthquake occurred in the south of Java Island with 9 SRs.
"The radioactive age of the elements that we found in Lebak, Banten and Bali have the same age. That is, there was once a tsunami in southern Java caused by an earthquake with a large magnitude, "he said.
Meanwhile, BMKG DIY Center VII Regional Earthquake Supervisor Nugroho Budi Wibowo said the BMKG would issue an early warning of a tsunami after a major earthquake. Early warning is delivered in four stages.
First, we only convey information containing earthquake parameters and continue early warning. Second, information that has been completed with tsunami arrival time estimation according to the modeling performed.
"Usually, we convey the second early warning in less than 10 minutes after the earthquake or depending on the 'update' signal that enters the system," he said.
A third early warning will be delivered in up to 60 minutes since the earthquake. The fourth warning is used to end the information submitted to the public.
Based on monitoring of earthquake events in southern Java, especially in Central Java, East Java and West Kalimantan, Budi said the number of earthquakes with magnitudes of less than 5 occurred 15-30 times each month.
"We indeed only monitored earthquakes up to 5 SR. Earthquakes of greater magnitude are the responsibility of the Head Office, the National Earthquake. The number of events is still normal. "There were no earthquake activity anomalies in southern Java in the past few months," he said.
Meanwhile, the Executive Head of BPBD Yogyakarta, Biworo Yuswantono said that DIY has the potential to be affected by 12 types of disasters both natural, social and disaster due to technological failures. Potential disasters include, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion, earthquakes, floods, droughts, tsunamis, strong winds, and disease outbreaks.
"Especially to deal with the potential for tsunamis, this year we held a" table top exercise "(TTX) for emergency handling. The aim is to ensure that all relevant parties are aware of the role and increase the capacity of each, in the event of a disaster, "he concluded.
