Timor Leste and Indonesia as neighboring countries want to build good relations. Therefore every problem that is still hampered and can trigger a misunderstanding in the future will be resolved soon.
JAKARTA, TIMOR NOW HATENE - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security, Wiranto said that he had discussed the settlement of land border territories with Xanana Gusmao, Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste. During the meeting, we agreed to complete the land boundaries in question by both countries.
This was resolved after former Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao met with Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta, Monday (07/22/2019).
The border areas that are still in dispute between the two countries are Iron-Citrana and Bidjael Noel Sunan-Oben, Kupang and Oecusse.
The Noel Besi-Citrana Border is an area in Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara which is directly adjacent to Oecusse-Ambeno, part of the Timor Leste region. Whereas Bidjael Sunan-Oben is an area located in Manusasi, Timor Tengah Utara Regency.
"With the completion of these negotiations, we convey that all land boundary negotiations are in principle complete. We will continue the negotiations to discuss maritime boundary issues," he said.
Wiranto said that he would soon complete the agreement, which was then set forth in the 2005 boundary agreement document.
"So by finalizing negotiations on the Indonesia-Timor Leste land border, we agreed to start maritime boundary negotiations," Wiranto said.
Meanwhile, on behalf of the Timorese government, Xanana expressed his gratitude to Wiranto for reaching an agreement in the negotiations. And we will immediately continue the discussion on maritime boundaries, said Xanana.
By resolving the problems of land and sea boundaries, in the future, people living on the borders of the two countries can live in harmony and peace as brothers.
